The following is for informational purposes only and does not replace the need for veterinarian care and and advice. If you have any questions or concerns about the health of your pet, seek veterinary care
Cats and dogs are wonderful companions that enrich our lives. But not everyone is able to own one. Some people live in places that restrict or don’t allow them at all. Other people suffer from allergies. And some just want to have something a little different. The good news is, there are so many options for great pets that you might not even realize.
Rodents:
When you think about rodents as pets, some that come immediately to mind are hamsters, guinea pigs, and gerbils. There are different breeds of these, just like dogs and cats, and you should research which would be best for you.
However, there are some less common rodents which also make fantastic pets such as rats, chinchillas, and sugar gliders.
Rats are incredibly social and smart animals with a bad reputation. They are actually quite clean as pets, easily trained, and fairly low maintenance. On the downside, they do require a lot of stimulation which usually means a bigger cage and lots of toys. They also have shorter life spans.
Rabbits:
Rabbits can be fantastic pets BUT they are more challenging than many people realize. They are quiet, can be trained to use a litter box, they have low odor, are social, and live a long time. On the other hand, their enclosures require daily maintenance, they chew a lot, they don’t generally like to be held (but do enjoy petting), and their diet and vet care can be expensive.
Another important consideration for rabbits it, despite how cute and fluffy they appear, they are not always the best pets for young children. Rabbits can be timid and children do not always understand this. Also, rabbits can be fragile. Their backs are prone to injury and excited children can do harm unintentionally.
Birds:
Owning a bird can be a wonderful experience. There are so many species that you can find one that fits your lifestyle and personality. They are generally good for people who might be allergic to pets with fur and hair. However, there are many things to consider before purchasing one.
Reptiles and Amphibians:
If you are looking for something very different, consider a reptile or amphibian. Turtles and tortoises, frogs and toads, geckos, lizards, snakes, the list is endless.
These pets can be a great choice for people with allergies to fur or feathers. Some of them are low maintenance. They can also be good for people who work long hours because these types of pets don’t usually require a lot social interaction.
However, please remember that the care of some of these pets can be complicated. Some also have very long life spans, there are tortoises that can live hundreds of years. These pets can be more expensive to buy, keep, and get veterinary care for so consider that before purchasing.
All of these pets have pros and cons and, like any pet, do your research first. Consider your lifestyle, capabilities, family, and finances before buying any pet. Remember that the expense of owning a pet does not end after purchase. Veterinarian care is a necessity for all pets. Care for exotics can be difficult to find and is often more expensive so don’t forget that when making your decision.
Pets come in all shapes, sizes, and types and I truly believe there is a a pet for every person. When the time comes for your next friend, don’t forget some of these fun and different alternatives.
